Italian cuisine is wide and varied but that doesn’t mean that anything goes! At Christini’s, we know authentic Italian cuisine and culture and if you ever find yourself in the homeland we know these tips will come in handy.
1. Unless you like dirty looks, don’t ask for Fetuccini All’Alfredo, Pepperoni Pizza or Caesar Salad.
If you’re in Italy, don’t get too excited to order your first authentic pepperoni pizza because it’s likely not what you think it is. Ordering pepperoni on your pizza might land you with a slice full of bell peppers instead of your favorite Americanized spicy meat slices. Don’t get too excited for Fetuccini All’Alfredo or Caesar Salad either or you might wind up disappointed. While Caesar Salad is simply an Italian immigrants invention, Fetuccini All’Alfredo is actually only truly served in one location: Alfredo Restaurant in Rome. This particular dish is specific to its creator, Alfredo di Lelio and is not a common variant of Italian pasta.
2. Unless you’re trying to not fit in, don’t use utensils.
Native Italians eat pizza with their hands, not with a knife and fork. While most Americans have adopted this method, some simply insist on using cutlery for this meal. To be fair, you won’t be assaulted for using utensils but cutting your slice into little square pieces is certainly a good way to stick out. Locals might not immediately know you’re American, but they’ll definitely know you’re not Italian. Hot tip: Italians also fold their pizza, making the eating process cleaner and just as delicious!
3. Unless you want to be lectured, don’t assume.
Italy is a unique country, alive with its own culture and cuisine and it definitely doesn’t need to be compared to its neighbors. If you’re visiting Italy and you’ve found yourself with a sweet tooth after your main course, don’t be disappointed at the dessert menu: Italy just isn’t as into sweets as some other countries are. That isn’t saying that Italian cuisine doesn’t have a variety of delicious desserts, like tiramisu and gelato but sometimes a slice of fruit will suffice. It’s also important to keep in mind that Italian diets aren’t simply pasta and pizza. Italian cuisine includes a variety of foods that are just as good as the well-known dishes. Try a little exploring and don’t limit your taste buds to the same routine.
