One of my earliest kitchen memories is of being 5 years old, sitting on a stool and being allowed to sprinkle the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the layers of lasagna noodles. It was a good feeling to be helping my mother, and I was learning all about how to make one of my favorite meals. I loved being in the kitchen with both of my parents. My dad was a great cook in his own right, and between the two of them, I developed the skills necessary to be successful in the kitchen. We shared many wonderful family memories filled with laughter and great food by cooking together. Now, as a mother of two boys, I am applying those skills and attempting to teach them the basics of good cooking, and I’d like to think we are creating some long lasting memories as well. I started with lasagna too. It is my hope that my boys will do the same with their children and continue our family tradition.
In many cultures, family cooking is an essential component of passing down traditions and customs from generation to generation. In Italian cooking, it’s compulsory. It’s what we do. From a young age children are given the simplest of tasks to perform (stirring, pouring, adding ingredients), but they are included in the preparation of family meals. Being tasked with a cooking duty helps to build self-esteem and working as a family builds memories and a sense of cohesion as a family unit. In many families today, cooking Italian food has been a great way to start the learning process.
Studies have proven that children who are involved in the cooking process are apt to have a more sophisticated palate and are more adventurous in food exploration. They learn healthy eating habits which will carry them through life. Regardless of age, it is never too late to get your kids interested in cooking; even if it’s just the basics or a few family favorites. Learning how to make a frittata, simple tomato sauce, meatballs, whatever you decide; the point is to get them involved.
As children grow and lives become busier outside of the home it is so important to keep the family centered. Making it a point to have a family meal at night is important, and including everyone in the prep of that meal is equally essential.
